Highland Homes Houston Review – What Buyers Should Know
Thinking About Building With Highland Homes in Houston?
Before you visit model homes or sign a contract with a builder, there are a few things you should know.
I’m James Potenza, a Houston new construction Realtor, and I regularly walk homes during framing and pre-drywall stages so buyers can compare builders before making one of the biggest purchases of their lives.
One of the reasons buyers ask me about Highland Homes is because I’m actually out there. I’ve toured model homes, walked homes during framing, and filmed construction progress in communities across the Houston area, including Meridiana, Midline, Legacy by Hillwood, Katy, Cypress, League City, and beyond. Building a Highland home with my clients from start to finish, I am always impressed and my clients are too. Highland quick move-ins (already built inventory homes)….
My clients still love them to this day. If they are relocating and can’t even make it into town, I sent them a video of their home, as if they were with me, and they fell in love with their new home when they arrived…moving truck in the driveway.
Those real-world observations help buyers compare builders and communities before they commit to a contract. AND….my clients LOVE their Highland Homes. I keep hearing this after over 20 years.
Why Buyers Choose Highland Homes
Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time walking Highland Homes during construction, touring inventory homes, and comparing them to other builders throughout the Houston area. One of the reasons buyers ask me about Highland Homes is because I have seen their homes at multiple stages of construction rather than only inside model homes.
In this video I share my observations, what stands out to me about Highland Homes, and why many buyers place them on their short list when comparing builders. You need to see these homes in the framing stage. It really helps understand home they build their home, any builder.
📹 Can’t visit Houston yet? If you are relocating to the Houston area or if you just cannot make it out the new home communities, I can personally visit and film homes, communities, and amenities for you.
Is Highland Homes a Good Builder?
In my experience, yes. After walking Highland Homes during construction throughout the Houston area, I’ve consistently been impressed with the overall build quality, organization, and attention to detail before the drywall goes up.
No builder is perfect, and every home should still have an independent inspection. However, Highland has earned a strong reputation for delivering well-built homes and standing behind their product. I’ve found their construction managers to be responsive, and when issues are identified during inspections, they’re typically willing to address them before closing.
One of the reasons I continue showing Highland Homes to my clients is consistency. Whether we’re touring model homes, quick move-in homes, or walking a frame before insulation, I know what to expect and can help buyers understand the differences between communities, floor plans, and available options.
I always recommend looking beyond the model home. A beautiful finished home is important, but what really matters is the quality of the construction behind the walls. That’s why I regularly visit homes during the framing stage and encourage every buyer to have independent inspections throughout the building process.
If you’re considering a Highland Home in the Houston area, I’d be happy to meet you at the community, compare it with other builders you’re considering, and show you what I look for before you make a decision.
Why Buyers Consider Highland Homes
Highland Homes is one of the most recognizable builders in Texas and has built a strong reputation among new construction buyers.
Many buyers are attracted to:
- Floor plan design
- Architectural detail
- Customer service
- Energy efficiency
- Build quality
- Included features
- Community selection
For many buyers, Highland Homes falls into the sweet spot between value, quality, and livability. And honestly, I have been helping my clients build or buy inventory home with Highland for over 20 years…...Highland continues to provide my clients with a superior product, excellent value price point (biggest bang for your buck), and their customer relations and warranty process are the best I have seen in the industry. ALL of my past clients and really good friends, still to this day, are very satisfied they bought a Highland! You could be my next happy client 🙂
Highland Homes Reviews
If you’re reading Highland Homes reviews, you’ve probably already narrowed your search down to a few builders and want to know if Highland is worth considering. After helping buyers purchase new construction throughout the Houston area and walking Highland Homes during construction, I’ve developed my own opinions based on what I see in the field—not just finished model homes.
Overall, Highland Homes has consistently been one of the builders I feel comfortable recommending to my clients. Their floor plans are well thought out, the finish quality is generally very good, and I’ve seen solid workmanship during the framing stage where buyers normally never get to look.
That doesn’t mean you should skip your due diligence. I recommend every buyer hire an independent home inspector during construction, even when purchasing from one of Houston’s most respected builders. Foundation, frame, and final inspections can identify items that are much easier to correct before closing.
The best review isn’t just reading comments online—it’s walking homes under construction, comparing builders side by side, and understanding what you’re actually buying before you sign a contract. That’s exactly what I help my clients do throughout the Houston area.
If you’re comparing Highland Homes with other builders, I can meet you at the communities you’re considering, walk available homes together, and point out the differences that are difficult to see during a typical model home visit.

What I Like About Highland Homes
One of the biggest advantages of walking homes during construction is seeing what most buyers never get to see.
Over the years, a few things have consistently stood out to me about Highland Homes:
Floor Plans That Live Well
Highland does an excellent job designing homes that function well for everyday life.
Strong Attention To Detail
From framing layouts to finish work, I often notice a level of consistency that buyers appreciate.
Communication During Construction
Many of my buyers report positive experiences throughout the construction process.
Inventory Home Opportunities
Highland frequently offers inventory and quick move-in homes, which can be a major advantage for relocation buyers.
Why I Walk Homes Before Sheetrock
Most buyers only see model homes.
I prefer helping buyers see homes before sheetrock.
At this stage we can evaluate:
- Framing
- Plumbing
- Electrical systems
- HVAC installation
- Structural layout
- Overall workmanship
This provides a much clearer picture of how a home is being built than a finished model home alone.
Highland Homes Communities I Cover
I regularly create videos and content from communities where Highland Homes builds.
Highland Homes In Meridiana
Meridiana remains one of the most popular master-planned communities south of Houston.
Buyers can find a variety of Highland floor plans, inventory homes, and new construction opportunities.
Highland Homes In Midline
Midline is one of the most exciting new communities in the Webster area.
Its location near NASA, Clear Lake, and major employment centers makes it especially attractive to relocation buyers.
Midline is quickly becoming one of the most interesting new construction communities near Webster, Clear Lake, and NASA. Highland Homes offers several floor plans in the community, and I’ve spent time walking homes during construction so buyers can see what happens before drywall goes up.

Highland Homes In Legacy
Legacy continues to attract buyers looking for new construction homes in League City. Highland Homes is one of the builders many buyers ask me about, especially those looking for a balance of design, livability, and construction quality.

Highland Homes Client Build Series – Legacy by Hillwood
I’ve been following this Highland Homes client build in Legacy by Hillwood from the foundation stage through construction and completion. If you’re considering a Highland Home in the Houston area, these videos will show you what the process actually looks like and what buyers should pay attention to before closing.
Foundation Stage
Watch the home at the beginning of construction and learn what buyers should look for before the slab is poured.
What I Look for During Every Highland Homes Frame Walk
One of the biggest advantages I offer my clients is walking their Highland Home before the drywall is installed. Once the walls are closed up, it’s impossible to see much of the home’s construction. That’s why I enjoy visiting during the framing stage and documenting what I find.
During every frame walk, I pay close attention to the overall workmanship and how the home’s major systems are coming together. Some of the items I look at include:
- Wall and roof framing
- Plumbing rough-ins
- HVAC ductwork and equipment placement
- Electrical wiring and panel locations
- Fire blocking
- Window installation and flashing
- Structural connections and bracing
- Attic access and ventilation
- Areas where different trades have worked together
I’m not a licensed home inspector, but I’ve walked enough new construction homes over the years to know what deserves a closer look. I also recommend that every buyer hire an independent home inspector during the foundation, frame, and final stages of construction. When the inspection is complete, we provide the report to the construction manager so any necessary corrections can be addressed before closing.
These frame walks are one of my favorite parts of helping buyers purchase new construction in Houston. They give my clients a better understanding of what’s behind the walls and more confidence in one of the biggest investments they’ll ever make.
If you’re building a Highland Home in the Houston area, I’d be happy to meet you at the job site, walk the home together, and explain what we’re seeing before the drywall goes up. Even better, I can help you compare builders. We will walk the homes in the framing stage together.
See the framing stage, attic, structural components, and the questions I encourage buyers to ask before sheetrock goes up.
Almost Done
The home is nearing completion. We discuss quality control items, punch-list concerns, and what buyers should expect before closing.
Highland Homes Quality
One of the questions I hear most often is, “How is the quality of Highland Homes?” Based on my experience walking Highland Homes during construction in the Houston area, I’ve found their overall quality to be consistently above average.
The real test of a builder isn’t the finished model home—it’s what you see before the drywall is installed. During frame walks, I pay close attention to framing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical work, roof structure, window installation, and overall workmanship. These are the parts of the home you’ll never see again once construction is complete.
Like every builder, Highland Homes occasionally has items that need to be corrected during construction. That’s completely normal. The difference is how those items are addressed. When my clients have independent inspections performed, I provide the inspection report to the construction manager so repairs can be made before closing whenever possible.
I always encourage buyers to compare builders side by side rather than relying only on online ratings. Walking homes during construction gives you a much better understanding of build quality than spending an hour inside a beautifully decorated model home.
If you’re trying to decide whether Highland Homes is the right builder for you, I’d be happy to meet you at the community, walk available homes together, and show you exactly what I look for before you make one of the biggest purchases of your life.

Why I Video Your Home Being Built
Thinking about building a new construction home in Legacy by Hillwood or anywhere in the Houston area?
One of the biggest advantages I offer my buyers is documenting the construction process from the foundation stage through final walkthrough. These videos help buyers understand how their home is being built, identify important milestones, and create a record of the construction process before the walls are covered.
Highland Legacy 2
Make Sure They Don’t Miss Anything
Not all new construction homes are built the same.
During frame walks and pre-drywall inspections, I help buyers look at the details that will soon be hidden behind sheetrock. Whether you’re building with Highland Homes, Perry Homes, David Weekley, or another Houston builder, this stage is one of the most important opportunities to verify construction quality before moving forward.
Highland Legacy 3
When Your Home Starts To Take Shape
This is the stage where buyers finally start seeing their future home come together.
As construction progresses, it’s easier to understand room sizes, layouts, traffic flow, and how the home will function day-to-day. For many Houston new construction buyers, this is when the excitement really starts to build and important decisions become easier to visualize.

Legacy by Hillwood continues to be one of the most popular master-planned communities in League City for buyers looking for new construction homes.
In this update, we’re checking on a Highland Homes client build and discussing what buyers should know about the construction process, inspections, timelines, and why it’s important to have someone representing your interests throughout the build.

When Your Home Is Complete, What Comes Next?
The home may be finished, but there are still important steps before closing.
From final inspections and construction manager walkthroughs to warranty discussions and punch-list items, buyers should understand what happens between completion and move-in day. This is one of the most important stages of the entire new construction process and can help ensure a smoother closing experience.
Highland Homes Complaints
It’s completely normal to search for Highland Homes complaints before buying a new home. In fact, I encourage my clients to research every builder they’re considering. Every large production builder will have complaints online because they build hundreds or even thousands of homes each year. The important question isn’t whether complaints exist—it’s how the builder responds when issues arise.
From my experience working with Highland Homes throughout the Houston area, I’ve generally found them to be responsive and committed to resolving legitimate construction concerns. No new home is perfect, which is why I always recommend independent inspections during the foundation, frame, and final stages of construction. Catching potential issues early gives the builder an opportunity to correct them before closing.
I’ve also found that communication plays a big role in a buyer’s experience. Staying involved throughout the build, asking questions, attending construction meetings when possible, and regularly visiting the home can help prevent small issues from becoming larger frustrations.
Rather than relying on online complaints alone, I encourage buyers to compare builders in person, walk homes under construction, and understand how each builder approaches quality, customer service, and warranty support. That’s one of the reasons I spend so much time documenting Houston new construction homes before the drywall goes up.
If you’re concerned about a particular Highland Homes review or complaint, I’d be happy to discuss it with you and help you compare Highland with other Houston builders based on real-world construction experience—not just online opinions.
Highland Homes vs Other Builders
One question I hear regularly is:
“Is Highland Homes the best builder?”
The truth is every buyer has different priorities.
The better question is:
“Which builder is the best fit for me?”
When comparing builders I encourage buyers to evaluate:
- Construction quality
- Floor plans
- Included features
- Lot options
- Incentives
- Inventory availability
- Warranty experience
- Long-term value
Inventory Homes vs Building a Highland home From Scratch
Many buyers assume they must build from the ground up.
That’s not always true.
Inventory homes can provide:
- Faster move-in dates
- Builder incentives
- Reduced uncertainty
- Simplified decision making
For relocation buyers especially, inventory homes can often be the better choice.
Should You Get a Home Inspection on a Highland Home?
Absolutely. I recommend that every buyer have an independent home inspection, regardless of which builder they choose—including Highland Homes.
One of the biggest misconceptions about new construction is that a brand-new home doesn’t need an inspection. The reality is that dozens of contractors work on every home throughout the building process. Even with an excellent builder and experienced construction manager, small issues can happen.
For buyers building from the ground up, I recommend three independent inspections:
- Foundation inspection before the concrete is poured.
- Frame inspection before insulation and drywall are installed.
- Final inspection before closing.
For quick move-in or inventory homes, a thorough final inspection is still one of the smartest investments you can make before taking ownership.
After the inspection is complete, I encourage my clients to provide the report to the Highland Homes construction manager. In my experience, this gives the builder an opportunity to address legitimate items before closing so buyers can move into their new home with greater confidence.
I’ve attended countless frame walks throughout the Houston area, and I believe seeing what’s behind the walls is just as important as touring the finished model home. My goal is to help buyers understand the construction process and make informed decisions every step of the way.
If you’re considering a Highland Home in Houston, I’d be happy to meet you at the community, walk available homes with you, and explain what I look for before you make your final decision.

Highland Homes vs. Perry Homes
Highland Homes and Perry Homes are two of the most respected new home builders in the Houston area, and I’ve helped buyers compare both in communities across the region. Rather than asking which builder is “better,” I encourage buyers to focus on which builder is the better fit for their priorities, budget, floor plan preferences, and community.
From my experience walking homes under construction, both builders produce quality homes. I recommend looking beyond the finished model home and comparing what’s behind the walls during the framing stage. That’s where you begin to see differences in construction methods, floor plan design, trade workmanship, and the overall building process.
Another factor to consider is the community itself. In many Houston master-planned communities, Highland Homes and Perry Homes build side by side, giving buyers a unique opportunity to compare similar homes, lot sizes, included features, and pricing in the same neighborhood.
I also recommend comparing warranty coverage, standard features, available inventory homes, and current builder incentives before making a decision. These factors can vary throughout the year and may have a significant impact on your purchase.
If you’re trying to decide between Highland Homes and Perry Homes, I’d be happy to meet you at the communities you’re considering, walk available homes together, and share what I’ve learned after years of touring new construction throughout the Houston area. My goal is to help you make an informed decision before signing a contract.
